Resource Family 101

Times Have Changed..

For decades, adoption carried an old-fashioned whisper: “It’s a last resort,” or worse, “they couldn’t have their own.” That stigma hid a quieter truth — people choose adoption for many brave, hopeful reasons: infertility, the decision to parent single, and LGBTQ people building families despite legal and social hurdles. Today, those whispers are fading. You see rooms full of children on court dockets and boarded-up group homes where the clock of childhood keeps ticking; you see single moms and dads, same-sex couples, and older parents walking into family courts with worn shoes and fierce love. Adoption is no longer a shameful fallback, it’s a deliberate, life-saving choice for children who’ve already lost time and stability. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of kids remain legally free for adoption or age out of care without a permanent family, often pushed into homelessness, incarceration, or an unstable adulthood. The reality is blunt and urgent: adoption isn’t just an option for a few, it’s a societal need, and the more people who consider it for compassionate reasons, the more childhoods we can save.

A Resource Family is someone who fosters. All interested individuals must attend an orientation first. The orientation will include:

  • Understanding the vital need for qualified Resource Families
  • Learning the realities of foster care
  • Expectations the agency has for all Resource Families
  • Approval process including complete background check, home inspections, family evaluations, and additional paperwork
  • Understanding the agency's and county's policies,  procedures and regulations

Anyone 18 and over may apply to become a Resource Family with Rebuilding Lives FFA regardless of gender, race, religion, political affiliation, handicap, marital status and/or sexual orientation.
